At its 37th Regular Meeting, in May 2007, the Executive Board approved a grant of US$ 1.5 million to the Government of Malawi for the establishment of a macroeconomic policy institute which will provide the government with economic policy research and analysis as well as offer it impartial advice.

The goal of the project is to strengthen public policy research and analysis in Malawi. Its expected results are to: i) build Malawi’s national capacity in public policy research and analysis to support policy makers and other stakeholders (through rigorous research and policy analysis); ii) build the capacities of other national research institutions in Malawi and provide technical support and advisory services to non-state actors in policy research and analysis (through training, fellowship programs, internships, attachments, study tours/exchange visits); iii) raise public awareness of development issues in Malawi (through dissemination, publication, networking/outreach and policy dialogue/discussion forum); iv)strengthen the policy dialogue platform that was institutionalized by the National Economic Council project enabling effective participation of all stakeholders; and v) establish a Malawi Directorate of Macroeconomic Policy Research and Analysis (through procurement, training, and infrastructure development).
